What "merging" a PDF means (and what it doesn't)

That's why the result doesn't lose quality — the images aren't re-compressed and the text isn't touched.
It's worth not confusing it with two similar things: sorting pages means moving pages around within a single PDF, and splitting means separating one PDF into several. Merging is the opposite of splitting: from many, one.

- Open them in a merge-PDF tool and drag them all in at once.
- Order them into the right sequence before generating the file: they're usually placed in the same order you drop them in, so double-check they're right.

The most common mistake: merging the files in the wrong order. Before downloading, check that the first one is really the one that should go up front — it's far quicker to reorder before merging than to redo it afterward.
Things worth keeping in mind
- If one of the PDFs is password-protected, you'll have to unlock it first: a merge tool can't open an encrypted file without the key.
